"Real-Time Three-Dimensional TEE - Intraoperative Perspectives"
G. Burkhard Mackensen, MD, PhD, FASE
Associate Professor of Anesthesiology
Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology
Department of Anesthesiology
Duke University Medical Center
Dr. Mackensen's professional training includes a residency in
Anesthesiology in Munich (Germany) and a two-year Fellowship in
Cardiothoracic Anesthesia at Duke University from 1998-2000.
In 2000, Dr. Mackensen successfully completed the National Board of
Echocardiography PTEXAM and upon returning to Germany has
also completed the equivalent German perioperative TEE certification. Back in
Munich, he completed a Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine and joined the clinical
faculty in Munich. In Munich, he established and directed the Perioperative
Echocardiography Services at the University Hospital.
In 2004, Dr. Mackensen returned to Duke and joined the faculty in the Department of
Anesthesiology as Associate Professor. Since joining the faculty at Duke, he has
been actively involved in the both the clinical and research aspects of TEE and
serves as one of four current reviewers of routine perioperative TEE at Duke.
Over the years, Dr. Mackensen has successfully published his academic work
including echocardiography related work in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Mackensen
is a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE) and a member of
both the American Society of Echocardiography's Intraoperative Council and
International Task Force.
In his faculty position as an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Duke
University, Dr. Mackensen has been active in teaching echocardiography and
anesthesia to Duke residents and fellows. Over the last year, Dr. Mackensen has
been leading the way in exploring the utility of Real-Time Three-Dimensional TEE
in the perioperative environment. Dr. Mackensen has lectured both nationally and
internationally on the role of perioperative two- and three-dimensional TEE in
cardiac anesthesia and surgical decision making.
At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to:
- Introduce the intraoperative use of Real-Time Three Dimensional TEE.
- Discuss the intraoperative use of Real Time Three Dimensional TEE
- Review the utility of Real-Time Three Dimensional TEE based on specific case scenarios.
