Anesthesiology 301
(Third Year Elective in Anesthesiology)

This two week elective will provide students with a brief, but in-depth exposure to the medical subspecialty of anesthesiology.  Upon completion of the selective, students will gain an understanding of contemporary anesthesia practice.  Students will learn various anesthetic techniques, physiologic monitoring, and the scientific background forming the basis of safe anesthesia practice.

Faculty: Robert W. Kyle, D.O., Fred J. Spielman, M.D., and Staff

This two week ANES 301 elective will pair the student with an anesthesia team (resident and attending anesthesiologist) and  allow them to assist in providing anesthesia to patients.  The clinical exposure will include a rotation through the various subspecialties of anesthesiology (OB, cardiothoracic, regional, pediatric, etc.).  The student will be exposed to all types of anesthetic techniques and witness the real life application of pharmacology and physiology.  During the elective, students will also attend the regularly scheduled afternoon lecture for our Fourth Year students (ANES 401).

Enrollment
The course is limited to two (2) students per two week session.  Spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis.  Application for the course is through the usual medical school course assignment process.  The Department of Anesthesiology reserves the right to cancel, alter, or reallocate sessions depending on enrollment and faculty availability.

Course Dates
The course will be offered in two week sessions.  The course will be available for enrollment starting in mid-September of each academic year, and be scheduled in two week blocks following that.  The calendar will be adjusted so that there are no sessions that encompass a University observed holiday or break period.  The last two weeks of December and the first two weeks of January will also be unavailable due to the usual holiday periods at those times.

Evaluation and Grading
The course will be graded on a Pass/Fail basis.  The grade will reflect attendance and participation.  Students are allowed one (1) absence during the two week block.  Two or more absences will result in course failure.  Other sources of failure will be lack of active participation (being late, not participating in all phases of the clinical case, etc. as determined by course instructors) or any behavior that violates the UNC School of Medicine code of conduct and professionalism.  Students are free to sign up for a second rotation, when available, to remediate failures.  Evaluation forms will be completed via the UNC Department of Anesthesiology standard medical student evaluation form (via our website) by course faculty.  Grades will be submitted via the One45 system.
