Anesthesiology 401
(Acting Internship in Anesthesiology)

The Anesthesiology 401 rotation provides insight and training in the principles of anesthesia and intraoperative care.  During the rotation, medical students experience pre- and postoperative evaluation of patients, direct patient care responsibility, and care of the anesthetized patient.  Medical students also gain an understanding of clinical pharmacology and physiology of the perioperative period, principles and practice of both regional and general anesthetic techniques, intravenous access and airway management, and exposure within anesthesia subspecialties including obstetrics, chronic pain, ambulatory surgery, post-operative pain service, cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, and pediatrics.

Prerequisites: Completion of all clinical clerkships

Min-Max Enrollment: 1-6

Composition (per week): Conference 7 hours; OR 35 hrs; Library 5 hours.

Offered: August through June

Duration: One elective period

Meeting time: 6:15 a.m.

Absences:  Only two are allowed during the rotation, including planned absences.  All planned absences need to be cleared through the chief resident in charge of medical student education.
