Anesthesiology 403
(Research Elective in Anesthesiology)
The Anesthesiology 403 research elective provides students with a basic understanding of the research process via participation in an anesthesiology-based project in any of the field's subspecialties (eg, ambulatory, cardiothoracic, critical care, liver transplant, neurosurgical, obstetric, pediatric, regional, pain management). Upon completion of the course, students will have an understanding of the Institutional Review Board (or Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) and have developed basic skills in electronic literature searches; data collection, management and entry; data presentation; simple statistical tests and preparation of manuscripts. Students will also spend time in the operating room observing cases and attend all departmental lectures.

Prerequisites: Completion of first year of medical school and good academic standing; permission from course directors
Enrollment: 1 student per elective rotation
Composition (per week): Training 2 hours; Operating Room 4 hours; Research Activities 26 hours; Lectures 8 hours
Offered: All elective periods except Block 1
Duration: One elective period
Meeting times: 8:00 a.m.
Meeting place: Assigned Lab, Department Library, or Operating Room UNC Hospitals
Absences: Only two absences are allowed, including planned absences. Planned absences must be cleared through the course director prior to the start of the elective.
