Residency Program

At UNC, education is our mission, and for the past forty years we have specialized in resident education. We combine an active teaching faculty, an unsurpassed clinical experience, and a modern hospital facility to produce a unique learning environment. The practice of anesthesiology demands a wide base of knowledge, technical facility, and a readiness to cooperate in teamwork. Specifically, The University of North Carolina experience provides:

  • A large and growing patient base with all patients available for teaching
  • A low resident-to-faculty ratio
  • A diverse staff of residents, an innovative and enthusiastic full-time attending faculty, and an impressive core of CRNA's
  • Approximately 28,000 anesthetics per year administered to inpatients and outpatients
  • A climate of support within the Department of Anesthesiology that fosters individual, personal and professional growth

What Our Residents Say About the UNC Experience

"During the past three years spent at UNC as an anesthesia resident, I have come to appreciate not only the great people who make this department like a true family, but also the amazing training which comes from the complexity of caseload and extreme variety of patients.  Each day, I have the fortune of learning from all those around me, including the faculty, my fellow residents, the CRNAs, as well as the patients themselves.  I  feel blessed to have my training enriched by such a special program."

"As residents, we do an amazing variety of cases in an environment that fosters learning and growth.  One day I find myself in a pediatric heart room and the next day I'm in the pain clinic placing an epidural under fluoroscopy.  Throughout everything, I can count on someone taking the time to teach, mentor, and perhaps most importantly, make me laugh so I want to come back the next day and start all over."

"After finishing my intern year at UNC,
I felt that I had learned to manage a wide
variety of patients and that I was ready
to begin my CA-1 year.  Now that I am
managing those patients in the operating
room every day, I am humbled by how much I have to learn.  Fortunately, I am surrounded by faculty who love to teach and who give me the opportunity to try new things on a daily basis. I also am fortunate to work with residents who teach each other, look out for each other, and who know how to make residency enjoyable.  UNC is an amazing place to train, but more importantly, at UNC I have found colleagues that will be my lifetime friends."
